Samsung Freezer Basics

Your Samsung freezer is essential for keeping your food fresh and safe for consumption. Understanding how it operates and how to optimize its performance is essential.

In this section, we will discuss the basics of Samsung freezers, which include the types of freezers, capacity and size, and energy efficiency.

Types of Samsung Freezers

There are two types of Samsung freezers: deep freezers and combination fridge freezers.

Deep Freezers

A deep freezer is a standalone freezer. There are two types of deep freezers that Samsung offers: chest freezers and upright freezers.

Chest Freezers

A chest freezer is horizontal, lower, and takes up quite a bit of floor space. One of Samsung’s chest freezer offerings is the 7.6 cubic foot Kimchi 2 Door chest freezer.

Chest freezers like this one offer the advantage of being generally less expensive than upright freezer. This Samsung appliance also tends to be quite energy efficient as the cold air can’t escape out of a chest freezer like it can with an upright freezer.

Unfortunately, a chest freezer does take up a lot more floor space than an upright freezer. Many choose to put chest freezers in an out of the way place like a garage (if your freezer is “garage ready”) or their basement. This prevents a chest freezer from encroaching on usable kitchen space.

Upright Freezer

An upright freezer looks a lot like a standard refrigerator, with the major exception that the entire unit is used for freezing items. When compared to chest freezers, upright freezers are more compact and have shelves, making it easier for you to organize and access your food.

They take up less floor space and aren’t quite as energy efficient. When you open the door of an upright freezer, it is easier for warm air to displace the cold air than it is with a chest freezer. This means that your appliance needs to work harder to keep things cold.

Convertible Upright Freezers

Samsung has a twist on the upright freezer experience. If you have considerable freezer needs but also need just a little bit of fridge space, you’ll want to check out their convertible refrigerator freezers. These units - like the 11.4 cubic food Convertible Stainless Upright Freezer actually have zones within the freezer that can be switched from freezing duty to refrigeration duty.

Samsung Refrigerator: A Combination Refrigerator - Freezer

Additionally, Samsung offers fridge freezer combos. Fridge freezer units feature both a refrigerator compartment and a freezer compartment.

When you say you’re getting a “samsung refrigerator”, you’re almost always referring to a Samsung refrigerator that has comes with an onboard freezing compartment.

Samsung offers a top freezer compartment freezer fridge option as well as one with a bottom freezer compartment. They refer to these as Top-Mount Freezer Refrigerators and Bottom-Mount Freezer Refrigerators. Most come with an ice maker.

Samsung also has french door refrigerator models which have two (or more) vertical doors. This type of Samsung fridge is also called side by side refrigerators.

These come in a variety of configurations. The doors have hinges on the outside of the model and open from the inside out so you can access your food. In most Samsung fridge models, there is an ice dispenser built into the freezer door.

Capacity and Size

When choosing the right Samsung freezer, it's essential to consider your storage needs and space constraints. Samsung’s one-door freezers have a capacity of around 11 cubic feet (315 to 323 liters or so).

Keep in mind that the exterior dimensions of the freezer will vary depending on its capacity and overall design and will add to the overall footprint of a freezer in your kitchen.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a critical factor to consider when purchasing a new Samsung freezer. Look for models with the ENERGY STAR certification, which indicates that the freezer meets or exceeds energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

These models can save you money on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.

Samsung has multiple upright freezers that are ENERGY STAR certified. As of this writing, the Samsung upright freezers RZ11T7474 and RZ11M7074 were both featured on the ENERGY STAR website.

Installation and Setup

Choosing the Right Location

Remember, your freezer's location should be easily accessible and have enough clearance to open the doors fully. Samsung recommends a minimum of one inch of clearance, and if possible, three inches between your Samsung freezer and the wall.

Before installing your Samsung freezer, it's crucial to keep these recommendations in mind when choosing the right location in your home.

Ensure that the space you select has enough room for the freezer size, has proper ventilation, and is close to electrical and plumbing outlets.

Unpacking and Leveling

After choosing a suitable location, carefully unbox your Samsung freezer. Once it's unpacked, allow the appliance to stand upright for at least 2 hours to let the refrigerant and oils settle.

Next, adjust the leveling feet to ensure the freezer is stable and leveled on the floor. A properly leveled freezer will prevent unwanted vibrations and noise and minimize door issues.

Electrical and Plumbing Connections

Before connecting your Samsung freezer to any electrical outlets, check the power supply voltage and frequency indicated on the appliance's label to ensure it matches your local electrical requirements.

Plug the freezer into a grounded outlet that meets local requirements and safety standards. If your Samsung freezer has a water dispenser or ice maker, follow the manufacturer's instructions for connecting it to the water supply.

Please follow these guidelines to ensure the proper installation of your Samsung freezer. If you have any questions, consult the user manual or contact Samsung's customer support for assistance.

Operation and Features

Temperature Control and Smart Features

Controlling the temperature of your Samsung freezer is essential for maintaining the freshness of your food items. To adjust the temperature, locate the Freezer button on the control panel.

Pressing this button allows you to toggle through the different temperature settings. If you need rapid freezing, activate the Power Freeze feature by pressing and holding the Freezer button for 3 seconds. This will speed up the freezing process on your Samsung freezer, and it will return to the previous temperature after several hours.

Interior Organization

Organizing the interior of your Samsung freezer allows for optimal storage space and easy access to your frozen items. Adjustable shelves and drawer compartments make it possible to customize the space to fit your needs.

Allow for your freezer to have proper airflow. Ensure that items are not blocking the air vents, as this can impede proper airflow and affect the appliance's efficiency.

Defrosting

Defrosting can be a giant hassle for many freezers that require manual defrosting. This arduous process involves removing all the food from the freezer and allowing the ice that has accumulated on the inside of the freezer to melt.

Fortunately, Samsung’s upright freezer models—both the One Door Freezer 323L Net Capacity and the One Door Freezer 315L Net Capacity—are frost-free. This means that the freezer automatically removes frost using a defrost heater to prevent ice buildup.

All-Around Cooling

Samsung freezers feature all-around cooling. This feature ensures consistent temperatures throughout your freezer compartment by properly circulating the air within your freezer to eliminate any potential “hot spots”.

Power Freeze

Power Freeze is a Samsung innovation that allows you to press a button to automatically set the freezer at the lowest possible temperatures. This power freeze feature works great to harden up the ice cream that you bought from the store so that it is ready to be eaten. It can also expedite the ice-making process.

LED Lighting

Samsung’s Freezers come with LED lighting. It is brighter and more energy efficient than traditional lighting. You can find what you want that much more quickly, which means you’re not letting all that cold air out of the freezer and raising your energy bills.

Reversible Doors

These doors can be mounted on whichever side of the freezer makes more sense. This allows you to fit freezers into tight spaces (like against a wall) without worrying about whether or not you’ll be able to open the freezer door. Just get your installer to set it up properly in your kitchen.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Routine Cleaning

To keep your Samsung freezer in good working condition, it's important to clean it regularly.

Fortunately, Samsung freezers come with a “Clean Back” label on the back side of the freezer. This backing covers all internal cables and coils and prevents dirt from collecting on components like condenser coils.

Removing Odors

Deodorizing your Samsung freezer is crucial to preventing unpleasant smells. If you notice a strong odor, the first step is to check for expired items and remove them immediately.

To maintain a fresh scent, Samsung recommends dumping unused ice every other week and cleaning the interior surfaces as needed. Additionally, consider using a baking soda solution or other natural deodorizers to neutralize any lingering smells.

Don’t let a foul odor ruin your day! Check for expired food and dispose ASAP!

Replacing Filters

Regularly replacing your Samsung freezer's filters is an essential part of proper maintenance. Change the water filter every six months.

This helps maintain water quality and keeps your ice and water dispensing features functioning optimally. You can find filter replacement instructions in your Samsung freezer’s user manual or online.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions

There are a few common issues that you may face while using your Samsung freezer. Here are some solutions to help you troubleshoot them:

Freezer not freezing: If your freezer is not freezing or maintaining the desired temperature, consider adjusting the refrigerator settings, inspecting and cleaning the door seals, and ensuring proper use and care.

This issue can often be resolved easily at home. More details can be found in Samsung's troubleshooting guide.

Freezer too cold: If your Samsung freezer is colder than the set temperature, ensure that the Power Freeze function is turned off. Power Freeze sets the freezer to the coldest possible temperature, and it will not turn off automatically for up to 72 hours on some models.

You can typically turn off the Power Freeze by touching and holding the Freezer button for 3 seconds, as mentioned in Samsung's guide.

Large ice buildup: It is not normal for your Samsung freezer to develop significant ice buildup. Potential causes include leaving the door open for too long or placing hot food items directly into the appliance.

Make sure that the door is properly closed and allow hot food to cool before placing it in the freezer.

Restarting the Freezer

If you continue to experience issues with your Samsung freezer, you can try restarting it. To restart the freezer, follow these simple steps:

  1. Unplug the freezer's power cord from the wall socket.
  2. Wait for one minute.
  3. Plug the power cord back into the dedicated wall socket.
  4. Allow the freezer to stabilize for a few hours before checking its performance.

Restarting your Samsung freezer can often help resolve any issues you may be experiencing. If problems persist or worsen, contact Samsung customer support for further assistance.

Warranty and Support

Warranty Coverage

Your Samsung Freezer Warranty generally includes one (1) year of coverage for parts and labor. In addition, you will have five (5) years of coverage for parts and labor on sealed systems. Lastly, there is a 10-year parts coverage on digital inverter compressors. For refrigerators, an extended warranty covers 2 years of parts and labor.

The coverage is applicable as long as your freezer falls within the warranty period and the issue is not caused by user error, misuse, or damage. Keep in mind that international warranties might have different terms and conditions.

Customer Service

When you encounter a problem and need support for your Samsung Freezer, several options are available to assist you. You can contact Samsung Support through chat and get expert help on your computer, mobile device, or tablet. Another option is to use the Samsung Members App on your mobile device, which also provides support services.

You can also visit a Samsung Appliance Authorized Service Center to get a detailed cost estimate and an estimated repair time if your freezer requires repair.

Third Party

Samsung is a popular brand and most appliance repair companies throughout the United States will have experience working on Samsung freezers and refrigerators.
